Members of the Afriforum Strand patrol rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty last Wednesday (2 March) when they cleared the open fields in Gants Centre of reeds, bushes and hiding spots. Named “Operation zero hiding place”, this action follows after the murder of Carmen Pienaar in an alleyway linking Mynhardt Street and the N2 highway, as well as sporadic reports of rape and robbery over the past few months, also in the same vicinity. Strand Patrol chairperson KC Gericke stated surrounding business owners supported the initiative to clear up the area, which now allows for a clear view on either side of the alley. “Our plan going forward is to increase security measures here with the installation of CCTV cameras to monitor access,” he said.
