An elderly woman died and three others, including two minor children, were injured in an accident on the R44 outside Gordon’s Bay earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon (18 January) when a car veered off the road and crashed metres down the rocky cliff.
According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, firefighters were alerted to the incident at 16:10.
Carelse said on arrival responders found no-one trapped in the motor vehicle, but Metro EMS paramedics applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an elderly woman.
The woman was declared dead after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts were in vain and terminated. Three patients were transported to hospital with injuries.
Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, a provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the woman, whose age was still unknown to authorities at the time of going to print, was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.
He added a 78-year-old man and two children, aged five and 10 respectively, were also transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
It is believed one of the children sustained a laceration to a leg while the other was critically injured.
“The driver of the blue Suzuki [Jimny], travelling on the R44 from Rooi Els in the direction of Gordon’s Bay lost control of the vehicle,” Swartbooi said.
“According to reports the vehicle left the road, overturned and rolled over the rocks, ultimately landing in the sea.”
Gordon’s Bay police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
