The first team of Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) travelled to Bishop Lavis CC in search of a much needed win in the WPCA 1B League on Saturday (28 January).

SWCC won the toss and elected to field, which paid dividends as the homes ide lost an early wicket. They, however, regrouped to be 70/1 at the first drinks break.

Bowlers Hein Claassen and Nigel Dirks bowled superbly to bring SWCC back into the game, claiming some wickets. They were ably assisted by Gouws Koen and Jan Punt to restrict the home side to 164 (all out). Claassen (3/15) and Koen (2/32) were the best SWCC bowlers.

In their chase, SWCC lost wickets early and were reeling on 43/3 at one stage.

Batsmen Larry Morkel and Jan Punt put on a 47-run stand to bring their back on track as they kept the scoreboard ticking.

Morkel was eventually run-out, but Wiehann Meyer and Punt guided SWCC to a much-needed bonus-point victory.

The best performing batters for SWCC were Punt (34*) and Meyer (34*).

This week SWCC will host Blue Bells CC at the Alan Olsen Oval (Radloff Park).
