Beaumont Primary is one of South Africa’s top five eco schools.
This prestigious nomination was recently made by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).
This is an outstanding accomplishment as more than 6 000 South African schools are registered eco-schools. Eco-schools coordinator for Beaumont Primary, Carol Viljoen, will attend the International Eco-Schools Managers Conference in Johannesburg next week where the featured poster will be on display.
Beaumont actively runs a recycling programme and operates a swop shop in conjunction with Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary.
The swop shop was started three years ago in Sir Lowry’s Pass by Foundation Phase teacher Carol Viljoen.
Beaumont learners swop items such as stationery, toiletries and non-perishable food for recyclable material from Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary.
The school was also recently awarded a Certificate of Merit at the Eco Logic Awards for this recycling initiative.
For the past seven years the schools have enjoyed their eco-school status, roping in several awards – including in 2009, the Green Flag.
In 2014 they were awarded the International Green Flag, followed by a Platinum Award a year later.
The Grade 3 learners have also started a food garden, terraced with recycled tyres. Each class has an earthworm farm which is used to fertilise the gardens. Compost is made by the Grade 2 learners.
An eco-garden, started in 2012 to encourage bird watching, has been successful in attracting a family of spotted eagle owls.
