The senior and middle year learners of Helderberg International School were treated to a talk and demonstration on embroidery by entrepreneur Trish Burr of Trish Burr Embroidery on Monday 9 September. The workshop comes after learners’ gallery visits, when teachers noticed that the lines have gradually blurred between traditional fine art and craft. With Burr’s talent directly on the school’s doorstep, they saw it as an ideal opportunity to introduce some possibly long forgotten embroidery techniques to the learners. During the session, Burr, also a parent at the school, introduced some embroidery techniques to learners and supplied embroidery kits to each participant. “Embroidery teaches wonderful fine motor skills and is hugely calming. We are especially keen to observe the results of our students’ endeavours in the future, trusting that it might encourage some to add yet another dimension to their work,” a statement from the school read.
