The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and will continue to expose learners to different fields of science with its Science Buddies initiative.

The objective, especially, is to have learners interact with actual researchers, to inspire them to develop their own scientific ideas which will then be presented as an expo project.

This year’s expo started at the Centre for Pedagogy in the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University (Suncep), a hub for the gathering of excited learners and dedicated teachers, and where the first Science Buddies session of the year took place on Saturday 8 February.

“A total of 14 schools and 101 learners attended the event,” said Stellenbosch Regional Science Fair Director Erika Hoffman.

“Learners decided on topics to research and completed their research plans before starting a background study on the topic of their choice. Facilitators helped and guided these ‘scientists in the making’ throughout the session.” Research activities at the Suncep Science Buddies club will lead into the annual regional expo, to be held in Stellenbosch in July.
