Following the cancellation of this year’s Eskom Expo, budding scientists of Parel Vallei High School participated in the school’s Young Scientist competition, hosted by the Physical Sciences Department in the third term. This gave learners, who entered online, the opportunity to showcase their interest and passion for this subject through different projects. The panel of six judges awarded first prize to Teon Kleynhans and Werner Badenhorst for their project entitled “Kragopwekking uit borrels”, while Marietjie Cilliers was placed second with her project “Investigating the difference in the health state of domestic dogs on a plant-based diet versus those on a meat-based diet”. Third place was shared by Priyanka Pitamber (“Water works”) and Stella Savides (“Deionization”). The winning team received a cash prize donated by Johan Stander. The winners (from left) are Priyanka Pitamber, Stella Savides, Marlie Stander (teacher), Werner Badenhorst and Teon Kleynhans. Marietjie Cilliers is absent from the photograph.
