Players of Macassar Cricket Club dusted off their spikes and cricket whites to face off in an inter-club friendly encounter at Riverside Oval on Saturday 8 January.
The match was organised by the club’s administrators in preparation of the start of the second half of the Western Province Cricket Association’s (WPCA) club cricket season this coming weekend. The Seagulls, as the club is fondly referred to, took plenty of positives from the match, which allowed the management and coaching teams to assess the players’ fitness and form following the enforced festive season break.
From a batting perspective, batsmen Peter Samuels, Quinton Bowman, Rowayne Sinden, Thomas Kemp, Shaun Jantjies, Clinton Jacobs and Shaygen Anthony were in fine form with the willow, spending some time out in the middle and notching up some runs despite the extremely hot conditions on the day.
In the bowling department, three bowlers performed well with the leather and impressed the team managers and coaches with their performances. The pick of the bowlers for both competing teams were Anthony (3/7 in 3,3 overs), Kenneth Adams (2/12 in 4 overs) and Steven Levendal (2/18 in 5,3 overs).
“It was a very hot day and the guys were dedicated, playing the game in good spirit,” a statement from the club read. “Thank you to the club’s management team for allowing the players this opportunity to get some game-time before the season retakes.”
This coming weekend all the local clubs will return to competitive play in various WPCA leagues. The fixtures for the Macassar CC teams are as follows:
Macassar CC: first team vs Wynberg CC in Wynberg on Saturday (15 January); first team vs Cravenby CC in Cravenby on Sunday (16 January); and second team vs Glamorgan CC in Macassar on Sunday.
