Thick smoke billowed into the air after a fire broke out at Bossa restaurant at Strand Pavilion Centre in Beach Road on Sunday evening (16 January). According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, fire crews responded to the incident at Bossa at 19:50. He said two fire engines, a water tanker, rescue vehicle and aerial appliance along with 16 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. “On arrival, white smoke was seen emitting from the extractor fans on the roof. It appeared the fire was a result of residue build-up in a pizza oven in the restaurant. A wood feature panel against one of the walls caught alight and was damaged before firefighters could douse the flames.” Carelse said the fire was extinguished at 21:01. No injuries were reported. Bossa Strand owner Benjamin Lazarus stated that the fire actually started outside and the smoke followed. “The pipe of the extraction unit overheated and this caused the incident. As soon as the this was detected, we let the people out and the fire department took over. The restaurant sustained very minimal damages and resumed normal operations the next morning,” he said.
