A full rail aboard Richard Tough’s Equation during the GBYC Opening Cruise at the weekend.

Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club (GBYC) marked the start of the 2022 sailing season with its annual Opening Cruise this past Saturday (12 February).

A total of 25 vessels supported the event, including two vessels from the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Station 9 (Gordon’s Bay). The south-westerly winds presented ideal conditions for sailing.

As per tradition, the fleet passed the GBYC commodore Jana Loubser, who was aboard the anchored catamaran Synergy, and gave three cheers. Afterwards, passing vessels “baptised” the first-time commodore with buckets of water and water pistols.

The day’s sailing was followed by a rock n roll and disco-themed party at the GBYC clubhouse.

The next event on the GBYC calendar is a dinghy sailing weekend at Theewater Sports Club this weekend (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 February), which will be held in conjunction with the Sailing Academy GB. The yachts are back in action for the start of the All Comers Series on Sunday 27 February.
