The South African Primary Schools Athletics Championships held in Potchefstroom on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 March, was the highlight for two athletes of Somerset West Primary School. It was their goal to reach the championships this year, the first for both athletes, after they missed out for two years due to Covid-19.

Canaan Eksteen and Taygen Koopman produced brilliant performances so far this year to come to this point. Victor and Victrix Ludorum at the Interhouse athletics, Western Province medals during the championships as well as many records at different invitational meetings are listed among their achievements.. They left the best for last and from just aiming to be selected for the Western Cape team to participate at the SA championships, they went on to win medals as well.

Taygen finished a brilliant fourth place in the 100 m event against very tough competition. She earned the title as the fourth best 13-year-old girl in SA. She also helped her 4×100 m relay team to win a silver medal by finishing second behind the team of Gauteng.

Canaan participated in the 100 m and 200 m events and earned silver medals in both. The avid athlete can be very proud to be rated as the second best sprinter in the 13-year age group in the country. He also guided the 4×100 m relay team to a gold medal by beating the team of Gauteng convincingly.
