The City of Cape Town’s health department and Mayco member for community services and health Councillor Patricia van der Ross, joined learners from Rusthof Senior Secondary in picking up stompies (cigarette butts) on Strand beaches. She said: “I want to commend these young people for giving up their time to help make our beaches beautiful. I want to encourage visitors to our bathing spots to ensure they drop their litter in a bin and keep our spaces clean for all to enjoy.” The clean-up came ahead of World No Tobacco Day on Tuesday (31 May), and this year’s theme, “Tobacco is killing us and our planet”, aims to raise awareness of the harmful impact of tobacco on the environment.
