As we head into the halfway stage of the season, rugby clubs in the Helderberg are truly in contention for play-off spots.
St George’s RFC are on a bye for the second consecutive week after their fixture against Langa was postponed last week, while Macassar RFC also gets a deserved break following their derby loss to Strand RFC. Raithby Universals, Sir Lowrians and Gordon’s Bay Pioneers are also off.
With the Stormers’ United Rugby Championship quarter-final against Edinburgh at Cape Town Stadium, club rugby matches could possibly start earlier.
This Saturday’s (4 June) fixtures are as follows:
) All Saints vs Langa (Helderzicht)
Saints have surprised friend and foe with a magnificent start to the season. Laying in fourth position in Super League B (SLB) is no easy feat. The backbone of their season has been accumulating points on the road. Their two close losses were against clubs laying above them on the log. Langa is a physical and skilful team, but will realise this is not the All Saints of old. Another win for the men from Somerset West will further cement their goal of finishing in the top four.
) Helderberg vs Scottsdene Central (Central Park)
Berge are unbeaten in SLB and have recorded away victories over two of the top-four teams, Belhar and Hands & Heart. This justifies their strong position and my highly criticised pre-season “favourites” tag. Scottsdene just don’t have what it takes to pose a serious threat. I foresee Helderberg taking another five points this week and remain in good spirits.
) Strand United vs Morning Star (Durbanville)
United come off a great victory over Pniël and will feel they’re getting into a groove with many new players at this level. Another win this weekend and they could become dangerous in SLC. Morning Star have been struggling but are very competitive at home.
) Strand vs Kraaifontein (Gustrouw)
The unbeaten Strand RFC are enjoying playing at home, after the early season fixtures saw them travelling far and wide. The derby win over Macassar was just the test that could make them unstoppable. Kraaifontein don’t have great memories of Gustrouw and history should repeat itself this week.
