Another dominant display by Helderberg RFC cemented their sixth consecutive victory of the season in a dominant win over Scottsdene-Central in Kraaifontein at the weekend.

A 0-31 half-time margin turned into a 0-65 final score, with the only criticism of the Strand team being that they kicked away possession too often and did not move the ball by hand.

Captain and eighthman Conway Pretorius opened the scoring in the corner, with a bullocking run in the sixth minute (0-5). In the 19th minute flanker Estehan Visagie followed his captain’s example to score in the same corner (0-10). This was followed by a try by loose-head prop Martin Oosthuizen under the posts in the 21st minute. Scrumhalf Michael Visser converted (0-17).

In the 29th minute, Pretorius ran from the halfway line to score his second try, under the posts. Visser added the extras (0-24). In the 38th minute Pretorius picked up from behind the scrum to send Visser on blindside for his converted try (31-0).

In the 42nd minute, Visser broke wide and sent the ball through the hands of his fly-half JJ Stover to full-back Donvino Swartland, who scored in the corner (0-36).

In the 51st minute, outside centre Quiwen Bauman cut the defence line to feed Swartland for a strong run to the line. Visser converted (0-43). In the 57th minute replacement prop Jurgen Dorfling gained possession from a ruck to score far out (0-48).

In the 69th minute, Swartland ran through to score his hat-trick, which replacement fly-half Errol Jaggers converted (0-55). In the 74th minute right wing Jody Koul crossed the line (0-60), while left wing Nigel Patrick scored the final try (0-65).

Berge’s stars in the all-round team performance were the loose trio of Pretorius, Visagie and Groenewald, and half-backs Visser, Stover, Swartland and Bauman.

The efforts of lock Shane Kennedy and props Oosthuizen and Dorfling must also be applauded.

The Helderberg second team won 6-12, the under-20A’s won 7-44, and the thirds lost 17-0 to False Bay fifo.

Berge will rest over the next round as they have a bye weekend.
