A provincial youth crime prevention summit was held by police in Macassar last Wednesday (29 June).

Stakeholders including police officers from various stations including Macassar, the Western Cape Police Provincial Band and various neighbourhood watches took part in the summit that was hosted inside the school hall of Zandvliet High.

The event was preceded by a parade through the streets of Macassar by the False Bay drummies and Delft Community Cadettes.

Not only did learners from Macassar attend the event but also learners from schools in Lwandle, Somerset West, Khayelitsha and Delft.

According to Macassar police spokesperson Sergeant Desire Adendolf the event also included people up to the age of 35 that still fall under the youth category.

During his keynote address Major General Vincent Beaton, Khay­elitsha Cluster Commander, highlighted the importance of youth. Other topics discussed by other speakers included child pornography, cyberbullying, social media dangers, teen pregnancy, suicide and gender-based violence.

The Western Cape Police Band delivered captivating musical performances. The band’s remarkable performances were complemented with items of song by Helderberg talent Donné Brown.
