In Helderberg RFC’s 10th consecutive Super League B victory on Saturday (9 July) the club maintained its superb run of form against a very willing and eager Busy Bees RFC outfit at the Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand.
The visitors, in fact, opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a converted try and, by the 34th minute of the match, led by 14-15 thanks to their superior front row. From then on Helderberg found momentum and were unstoppable right until the final whistle, when they were crowned 71-18 victors.
The home side, who seemed uneasy and somewhat rattled in the first 30 minutes of the encounter, found their mojo to perform out of their skins for the balance of the fixture. In the final analysis, Berge scored 11 tries, including a great hat-trick of tries from the 34-year-old loose-head prop, Theodore Ntikinca.
The 26-18 scoreline at the break underlines the initial tempo of the match, while the 71-18 final account tells a very different story.
The two Helderberg wingers, left wing Luke Hertz and right wing Jodi Koul, each bagged two tries, while lock forward Shane Kennedy, eighthman Estehan Visagie, full-back Danvino Swartland, and scrumhalf Marshall Douman each scored once. Douman, the assigned goalkicker, converted eight times for a personal contribution of 21 points in the outing.
In the other matches played this weekend Helderberg’s second team were 62-5 victors over their Busy Bees counterparts, while the home side’s under-20A recorded a 36-3 win. Berge’s third team were also in action in the Reserve League against Hamiltons III, taking a nail-biting 17-15 victory.
This coming Saturday (16 July), the third test between the Springboks and Wales takes place at DHL Stadium in Green Point, therefore no league fixtures have been scheduled. Helderberg will again be in action on Saturday 23 July, when they host Collegians RFC at the Charles Morkel Stadium.
