An event hosted by I Am, an organisation in Macassar, on Saturday 20 August was attended by women from all walks of life coming together to inspire and share, and uplift one another.

Organised by I Am founder Waseemah Flaendorp and her business partner, Simonia Fouten, dozens of women from the community were invited to attend.

“The organisation is for women and is about empowering women through upskilling,” Flaendorp explained. “We teach arts, sewing and crafts, and encourage the use of waste materials, which also forms part of our message of saving the environment. We make items from plastic spoons, bottle caps, old jeans and just about any product that others may consider waste.” She said those attending included vulnerable women in need of employment.

All the decor on the day was handmade as a visual of what one can achieve by using your hands and being creative, including ornaments and centrepieces, jewellery and clothing.

“Our message of the day was reduce, re-use and recycle,” said Flaendorp.

Dr Sumaya Clarke, team leader of Shzen, gave the women facials and hand massages.
