Firefighters on-scene where a garage nearly went up in flames at a house in Goede Hoop, Strand, on Tuesday (13 September). The incident is one of two blazes that the City’s Fire and Rescue Services responded to that day.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services was called into action for two separate fires in Strand on Tuesday (13 September). Firefighters were alerted to the first incident at a residence Karl Kielblock Crescent in Goede Hoop around 14:50. 

According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Fire and Rescue Services, firefighting crews from Strand and Somerset West fire stations responded to the emergency call of a garage alight at the front of the property.

Carelse said altogether 12 firefighters, two fire engines and a water tanker were dispatched to the scene. “Two motor vehicles sustained slight damage and the dwelling had smoke damage only. The cause of the fire is not yet known,” he said.

“The fire was extinguished at 15:50. No injuries were reported as the fire was isolated to the garage area. ”In another raging blaze around 23:00, a house in Daniel Street was severely damaged. Carelse said the cause of the fire is believed an unattended lit candle.

“The bedroom at rear of the house was gutted and all the contents destroyed. No injuries were reported.” 

The fire, which was mainly restricted to the bedroom, was extinguished at 00:25.
