To mark International Day of Older Persons (1 October), a celebration to emphasise the importance of senior citizens was hosted at Sencit Resthaven on Friday 7 October. Present at the event were Helderberg firefighters as well as two young volunteers, all of whom prioritised the importance of showing loving support to society’s legends. Donations included care packages for residents of the old-age home, a delectable, healthy lunch on the day and a brand-new washing machine for use at the Strand facility. Senior firefighter Marco Jaggers, on behalf of the local heroes, thanked pensioners for the sacrifices made throughout their lives, for raising sons and daughters, some of whom have excelled as great leaders. “You have paved the way for us,” said Jaggers.Photos: Jamey Gordon

The elderly residents enjoyed the day held in the honour, basking in the warm Spring sun while enjoying nibbles during formalities.

At the event Bock shared the poem “Grandparents are special” during a reading, while Pillay in a special address urged the elderly to speak out against injustices instead of suffering in silence.

Strand police representatives Warrant Officer Nico Beukes and Charlene Bezuidenhout enforced their mandate of bringing services to the elderly. They are pictured with Lilian Albertyn (in her capacity of victim-support volunteer) and Matilda Willemse (representing neighbourhood watch).
