The Race2Stanford Triathlon (R2S), which was due to start in Gordon’s Bay this past Saturday (22 October), was struck a “blow” when the strong south-easterly wind caused the start to be moved to the Overberg.
Last week DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette reported on the latest instalment of The Detour, which was set to start with a 1,9 km swim in the warmer, calm waters of the quaint seaside village Gordon’s Bay Main Beach (“GB has spirit, yes it does!”, 19 October). However, organisers moved the start of the event to Hermanus.
“While some say that the wind is born in Gordon’s Bay, I know that when it reaches Camps Bay it is an adolescent,” said Jeanette Loring, spokesperson for the Gordon’s Bay Business Forum.
A post on the Facebook page Race2Stanford stated: “A big thanks to the dedicated athletes and the supportive [Overstrand] Municipality for allowing us to change the route when Gordon’s Bay was blown away. We were able to get out there and do what we love rather then being forced to cancel. It’s the South African way.”
The Gordon’s Bay Residents’ Association also took to social media, thanking neighbourhood watch members who patrolled the night before, assisting the organisers with the set-up, and being ready to marshal early on Saturday morning.
