A programme aimed at turning children and young adults into better swimmers, while teaching them about taking care of the environment, was launched in Strand earlier this month.

Brendyn Alloys, a volunteer with the Amakhaya Learn2Swim programme, said the initiative was launched in partnership with the City of Cape Town and seasoned swimming coach Moosa Essa.

He described it as a flagship programme with phenomenal medium and long-term outcomes for all participating children and young people.

“Our aim is to teach youths how to swim and equip them with other life skills to make positive lifestyle choices to live a well balanced life,” Alloys related.

“We also want to develop their potential to the fullest so that they can achieve their goals and dreams.”

Amakhaya Learn2Swim plans to expose the its young participants to positive male role-models.

“These role-models will mentor, assist, guide and support the youths to navigate through the difficult adolescent and teenage years,” Alloys pointed out.

“This is a social crime prevention programme that creates opportunities for children and youths to learn new skills, apply these newly acquired skills and develop their abilities and potential to the fullest. It is based on the premise that prevention is better than cure.”

He stated it is important to ensure the well-being of younger generations for a more prosperous and postive future.

“We currently have 15 children from Allan Boesak Village, Broadlands Park, Casablanca, Gustrouw, Rusthof and Sercor Park participating the project.”

To make the dream a reality, Alloys is calling on businesses and individuals to partner with Amakhaya Learn2Swim and support the work that the volunteers are doing in the community.
