Somerset West Primary School (SWPS) awarded its top achievers in academics, sport and culture at its annual prize-giving held on Tuesday 8 November. Among learners honoured was Chaeli Wright, who earned the top academic award as the Dux learner and top Grade 7 achiever, with an average overall result of 83,03% and top marks in social sciences as well as life orientation. Furthermore, a special mention went to the top Grade 4 to 6 achievers, Nubaid Smith (Grade 4 – 90,0%), Kristen Nel (Grade 5 – 87,50%), and Josiah Wenn (Grade 6 – 88,67%). All-rounder Canaan Eksteen reeled in the accolades at the prize- giving including the prestigious Principal’s Award. The ace sportsman and academic achiever was honoured with numerous awards, including a top 10 academic award, Senior Sports Boy of the Year, best achievement in the school for 2022 for his two silver medals and one gold bagged at the South African Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships, best achievement in under-13 rugby, Player’s Player of the Year, and Victor Ludorum for athletics. He was also recognised for earning his provincial colours in athletics, rugby and sevens rugby. Pictured with the deserving recipient is his proud mother, Natalie Eksteen, who was welcomed to the stage to present him and others with their awards and a warm congratulations.

Taygen Koopman was named Senior Sports Girl of the Year, and Victrix Ludorum for swimming and athletics.

Zaarah Meyer was honoured as the Best Foundation Phase Swimmer and Junior Sports Girl of the Year.

Shariq Paulse earned the titles of Best Foundation Phase swimmer and Junior Sports Boy of the Year.
