Day one (28 December) of the popular Six Gun Grill Trans-Agulhas Challenge was off to a good start as teams had the opportunity to test out their boats and size up the competition.

The first leg took place from Plettenberg Bay to Mossel Bay where teams had to cover a distance of 188.5 kilometers.

The challenge started at Hobie Beach and headed towards Nature’s Valley for the first check point and then backtracked to the second check point at Plettenberg Bay’s Main Beach and then onto a checkpoint at Brenton on Sea, passing Knysna on the seaward side of the Knysna Heads. After that it was on to beach checkpoints at Swartvlei and Wilderness, then on to check points at Glentana, Groot Brak River and Klein Brak River. After Klein Brak River the boats needed to stay on the land side of the seal island (passing between the island and Diaz beach) and on to the finish at Santos Beach.

The top three on the first day were:

1. Marc Gleed and Herman Erasmus from team Rusgenot Transport.

2. Eben de Bod and Henco Nel from team SAFAM/Robertson Toyota.

3. Fanie Mostert and Michael Coetzee from team Six Gun Grill.

Today (29 December) on day two of the race the teams will race from Mossel Bay to Stilbaai.
