The Somerset College matric class of 2022 has produced the school’s best set of Independent Examination Board (IEB) results in the school’s 25-year history.
They maintained the college’s unbroken record of a 100% bachelor’s degree pass rate and amassed an impressive average of four A symbols per learner and 315 in total, improving on the previous three As per learner.
Furthermore, many featured in the upper reaches of the IEB results nationally, with Samuel Chemaly, Troy Curtin and Kiran Ehret given Commendable Achievement awards for achieving within the top 5% of all IEB candidates nationally in five subjects and an A symbol for life orientation.
Somerset College students were also awarded 23 Top 1% awards for featuring in the top 1% nationally across a range of subjects. In all academic departments the school’s average was higher than the national average.
Students obtained an average over 10% higher than the national IEB average in 12 subjects, including accounting, Afrikaans first additional language, geography, German second additional language, history, information technology, life science, mathematics, further studies mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical science and visual art.
Graham Sayer, executive head of Somerset College, said resuming a full programme after three years would be a challenge, especially for matrics. “But in you we’ve had excellent examples for our younger grades – enthusiastic participation, creativity, excellence, leadership, resilience, character, and a bit of fun along the way,” he said.
“You have also produced the best matric results in Somerset College’s 25-year history. Our warmest congratulations, we’re very proud of you and wish you a happy, fulfilling future.”
