With World Cancer Day being celebrated this Saturday (4 February), Helderberg Hospice is calling on locals to help to “close the care gap” by undergoing regular screening and discussing the importance of early detection.
The globally recognised day was initiated by the Union for International Cancer Control to raise awareness about screening and early detection of treatable cancers in 2000. It aims to remind people that everyone has a role to play in the fight against cancer, and that equitable care should be available to all.
The day also presents people with a platform to remember loved ones and others who have been affected by cancer as well as celebrate their strength and courage on their journeys.
To close the care gap, you can also:
• Wear sunscreen every day and wear a hat when spending time outdoors.
• Regularly check your body for any lumps and seek medical advice if necessary.
• Check moles regularly, and should they change colour and/or shape, seek medical advice.
• Get the regular check-ups recommended by medical professionals.
