Two Forward Foundation teams – Score Forward Legends 7s and Score Forward Legends 10s – enjoyed great success at two top tournaments on Saturday 4 February.

This success means the Forward Foundation, which is based in Raithby, is moving forward faster, having already featured in four highly competitive tournaments this year. In January, the Score Forward Legends clinched cup victories at the Wolseley and Wits Barbarians 7s tournaments.

The Score Forward Legends 7s beat Boland club rugby side, Hillcrest RFC, in the FFG Sports Scorpions 7s final to claim their third cup title for the year. Former Metho Squirrel and Hottentots-Holland High player Keanu Maree dotted down 11 times, the most by any player in the tournament.

The Score Forward Legends edged out Macassar RFC 26-19 in the cup quarterfinal. The MC Boys, the only Helderberg-based rugby club to feature in the Scorpions 7s tourney, would go on the claim the plate title section, beat the SA All-Stars Academy from Pretoria.

At the ever-popular Cape Town 10s tournament in Green Point, the Forward Foundation side competed in the Premier Division and came up short in the semi-final, losing to a team called Swift. They would go on to finish in the top section in fourth place, after narrowly losing in the third-place play-off against Titans.

The Forward Foundation sides are coached by St George’s RFC stalwart Patrick van Wyk and head coach Zhaun Booysen, who has played Strand RFC and Belhar RFC as well as the Western Province 7s team.

“We are very proud of how the boys are playing,” said Le Roux Conradie, founder of the Forward Foundation. “Zhaun and Patrick are working hard to implement our processes and create the needed culture and we are extremely satisfied with how we are progressing. The players give it their all and we try to make sure they have the resources to grow and develop. Moving forward faster is key to the development of players and coaches.”

The Score Forward Legends 7s side will again be in action during a tournament at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport from Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 February.
