Imagine a principal from a well-known school with a couple of empty trolleys in a grocery store and the goal of collecting as many baby products and sanitary pads that’s possible in an allotted amount of time for a good cause.

Well imagine no more.

On Tuesday 14 March, the principal of Parel Vallei High School (PV), David Schenck lined up at KWIKSPAR Somerset in Lion’s Square for a very special 80 seconds charity trolley dash. The dash formed part of an eight-year partnership for KWIKSPAR Somerset at Lion’s Square and Parel Vallei’s annual Golf Day that is scheduled to take place on Friday 17 November. Schenck and his many helpers ran through the isles looking for baby products and sanitary pads while a crowd of shoppers and staff cheered them on. The principal (and his helpers) managed to fill the trolleys with products worth R13 300.

Baby products were collected for Naomi’s Joy, a registered non-profit organisation that cares for vulnerable babies until adoption, and sanitary pads were collected for the New Heritage Foundation, the beneficiary of the HelderbergFM 93.6 #EndPeriodPoverty campaign.

Since Naomi’s Joy was launched at the start of 2015, it has taken in 37 babies, and they have all been placed in the capable hands of their care families. Most of these babies have been adopted into forever families, while others have gone into foster care, and some reunited with their families.

One of the outreach projects of the Parel Vallei ATKV youth branch is the collection of sanitary products, and when the Somerset West school heard of HelderbergFM’s “End Period Poverty” Campaign it knew it had to stretch Schenck’s running and quick shopping abilities even further. SPAR’s Sanitary Pads Petal range is subsidised, and this is why Schenck scooped up as many packets as he could as a pack of eight pads costs only R6.

PV extended a big “thank you” to the team of KWIKSPAR Somerset Lion’s Square for hosting this event and supporting these charities with extra donations, extra time on the clock and so many extra hands to help Schenck fill the trolleys.
