Employees of the Rheinmetall Denel Munition’s (RDM) Somerset West depot (RDM) recently partnered with residents of the surrounding communities of Macassar and Firgrove for a clean-up of circumambient public areas including Macassar beach.
The initiative saw participants roll their sleeves up, as part of a bigger campaign championed across RDM sites under the theme “Taking care of our people, our planet and our environment”, aimed at sensitising employees and fence-lined communities on the importance of caring for the environment and playing a meaningful role towards a greener future.
“Taking care of our planet is the greatest responsibility bestowed to humankind,” RDM CEO Jan-Patrick Helmsen pointed out, “in which everyone can play a role in decelerating the effects of climate change starting with micro steps of reducing our pollution footprints by taking care of our immediate environment. At RDM we are part of the solution; we are in process of replacing our combustion engines vehicle fleet with e-cars and hybrid vehicles. The ground breaking process of our solar PV plant has commenced at our Somerset West operations, and we are going to generate our own renewable energy and minimise our dependency on fossil fuels.”
In July last year RDM introduced e-scooters, including a charging station, as well as two mini e-buses that will be used for commuting at two sites in the local depot in hopes of the overarching goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.
