The Helderberg hardware and buildware gem BUCO Somerset West blows 120 candles on its birthday cake out this year!

Looking forward to a milestone year, the decades-old business that has cemented its place in the basin as a trusted partner in building, fixing and renovating, wishes to keep building on its proud 120-year legacy and tradition of continuously serving the ever-supportive Helderberg community.

Store Manager Bertus Malan expressed management’s collective gratitude for the valued community support, which has contributed to business liveliness and growth, with an invaluable staff complement through whom the company well serves and uplifts the community.

“A massive thank you to the Heldeberg community, which has aided our growth over the past 120 years,” he warmly declared, “and our staff who make it possible for the store to help build the community up.”

Malan’s journey with the BUCO group started 23 years ago when he was employed as junior salesman who climbed the business ranks and secured his current position at the local store in 2016.

BUCO Somerset West is ideally located in Victoria Street, offering all things needed for building, DIY and maintenance that are guaranteed to keep any project moving.

Apart from a long standing reputation and diehard dedication to the best prices on the hardware and buildware block, the respected store manager reckons its recipe for business success is also attributed to prioritising their involvement in the community and fiery determination to provide customers the quality service they deserve.

“The most crucial part of our success is our staff,” Malan added. “We have staffers dedicated to putting the customers’ needs first, delivering superior service and offering expert assistance and advice.”

The business boasts many staffers who have nurtured a long and fruitful career with BUCO.

They include Roy de Morney, who joined W Miller in 1964 and retired after 55 years of excellent service as well as Pat Gordon who joined in 1971 and called it a day after 48 years of dedicated service n 2019. Still living and breathing the BUCO ethos and building up trusted relationships with customers by offering the best advice, best deals and meeting their needs, are Patrick Mzwakali who, as yard end-controller, celebrates 25 years of outstanding service and cleaner Gladys Boonzaaier, who looks forward to a 20-year journey with the household brand.

While BUCO has grown to more than 90 branches within the last few years, the Somerset West branch remains the long-shimmering jewel in the crown of the group’s achievements.

The accolades have come streaming in; BUCO Somerset West was named Best Performing Store for its outstanding contribution to local retail last year.

It also won third place for the Best Merchant Store in 2022, Store of the Year in 2021, Steinbuild Store of the Year in 2017 and for being part of the Club 10 for the last two years.

Looking back proudly across the milestone that makes up these years, the store hopes to stay relevant to the market and keep up business growth, and stay abreast of new shopping trends without forgetting old-school service still works.
