The juniors of Strand Cricket Club (SCC) were celebrated after a very successful and outstanding season that witnessed some great team and individual performances, which augurs well for the future of the club.

A prize-giving event was hosted on Saturday 1 April, which served to acknowledge the contributions of every player and staff member as well as supporters of the club.

The special guest speaker was the well-known school sports coach Winston Baard, who motivated the juniors while applauding the management for the work they have done to keep the team together, making them feel appreciated on the day.

Baard, president of the Squirrels Old Boys and rugby coordinator at Somerset West Methodist Primary School, is a highly respected figure among the sporting community, who look up to him with praise and admiration.

The juniors played 10 games, of which they won seven, a success attributed to coach Niklaas Thomas, who was well praised by the SCC board for helping the juniors with their practices and improving their skills.

The top scorer with the bat for the squad was Henry Taylor, who has been in sublime form and has also starred for Temperance Town School, which he also plays for.

The awards were handed out by Lesley and Chrizelda Taylor with chairman of SCC Isador Armien the host of the day.

Amazed by the resilience of the team, Armien said every time the juniors played they were clearly giving it their all.

“No total was ever too high for them to chase down,” he quipped, and also acknowledged some members that helped with sponsorships for the juniors who were present at the awards.. The curtains have come down on the cricket season, and for any information about Strand Cricket Club’s juniors contact Lesley Taylor on 082 463 9078 or chair Armien on 082 676 4327.
