Young Bafana’s senior professional team clinched the Western Cape ABC Motsepe stream B title in a nail biting finale against FN Rangers on Saturday 15 April at Royal Road Sports Ground in Maitland.
Young Bafana only needed one point from the game while FN Rangers had to win to lift the title. The stakes were high as the closely contested and highly competitive game was very evenly contested. “The Young Bafana defence was rock solid throughout,” a statement from the club read, “and was aided by brilliant goalkeeping from Mogamat Salie, who made ‘the save of the season’ early in the game.”
YB took the honours by virtue of a late winner to clinch the match 1-0 and deservedly lift the title.
“What makes the performance even better is the fact that YB won it at its very first attempt in the ABC Motsepe League,” the club stated. “The departure of the coach, assistant coach and several players after the first three matches put new coach Ashraf Calvert under enormous pressure. However, in a cool calm and collected manner he moulded the squad into a formidable unit despite the opposition prophets of doom predictions, he proved them all wrong.
“Congratulations go as importantly to the whole squad, coaches, trainers, managers and supporters for their unwavering effort and support in achieving this well deserved title”, it concluded.
Young Bafana will now take on the winners of the other stream in the Western Cape, Zizwe United for a place in the national play offs in Johannesburg later this month.
