The Somerset West City Revival (SWCR) Aesthetics Group has extended an invitation to local artists from the Helderberg area to submit proposals for a community mural project in Somerset West.

“We are seeking creative minds to propose ideas that aim to inspire and engage locals and visitors alike.” reads a statement from the group. “We welcome innovative ideas that use different mediums and reflect a range of styles and techniques (think outside the box!) that transform plain wall panels and urban spaces into unique, vibrant and inspiring works of art who add that the project is a great opportunity for artists to showcase their work and make a positive impact on the community.”

Submissions are open to artists who are interested in donating their time and talent to create murals on assigned wall panels and artists from all backgrounds and styles to apply.

Preference will also be given to artwork that considers nature and a natural landscape that showcases local fauna and flora or local heroes protecting the natural landscape, anything that showcases the rich local history of the Helderberg or the cultural diversity of its communities.

“As a common thread the proposed mural artworks should be in line with the SWCR project’s goal of uplifting the community and should be appropriate for a public space, and should not infringe on the copyrights of others or pose a hazard of any kind,” continued the statement.

The wall in question is located at 1 Drama Street in Somerset West and is at street level with various sized panels available with a height of 2,6 m and widths ranging from 1,2 m, 2,8 m and 4 m.

Successful bidders will be assigned a wall panel to paint and artists will be offered limited sponsored assistance with art supplies and the use of basic scaffolding, depending on the proposal. Artists are therefore requested to submit an art-supply list and budget along with their mural proposal.

“In certain cases the wall size may require a collaborative effort or the building owner may prescribe a colour palette,” said the SWCR statement. “You will be required to indicate your willingness to comply when submitting your proposal.”

Anyone interested in participating must submit the proposal and art-supply budget by Monday 15 May via email to swcrartroute@gmail.com.

Artists are invited to submit a sketch, mock-up of the proposed mural/installation, preferably superimposed on a photo of the target wall or installation area. Submissions are free and limited to one submission per artist.
