An advisory released by the Two Oceans Veterinary Group on Wednesday 12 July alerts dog lovers to a sudden influx of puffer fish along False Bay that could put their furry friends in danger.
“Hold off those beach walks,” it stated. “We strongly urge all dog owners to steer clear of the beaches for now. Let’s play it safe and explore alternative spots such as parks, sports fields or commons.” The group elaborated that if an adventurous pup happened to snatch and swallow a puffer fish they may start drooling excessively, which is a red flag.
“In such a situation there’s no time to waste. Rush your four-legged buddy to the immediately.”
According to Lisa Starr of Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (Hoam) there have been no reports so far of any puffers on Strand or Gordon’s Bay Beach.
“But this does happen now and again,” she warned, “It’s normally connected to high seas and a change in water temperature. When there have been a lot of strong winds and heavy waves the puffer fish get tired and worried. They then blow themselves up a bit, which is not ideal when there are heavy swells coming in.” Starr reminded the community please always to respect the wildlife on local shores.
“Don’t touch them and don’t let your dogs near them,” she stressed.
