Macassar police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a local nurse was seriously wounded in a shooting incident in Firgrove on Saturday morning (12 August).
According to provincial police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, local police responded to the incident in Jacaranda Avenue, Salvo Park, around 07:00 and on arrival found a 51-year-old woman with gunshot wounds.
“Reports suggested that the woman opened the gate to the premises when she saw two unknown men behind the car. A scuffle ensued, which resulted in the victim being shot,” Swartbooi said.
“The unknown suspects, who fled the scene are yet to be arrested.”
While it is believed that the victim was targeted in a suspected carjacking, Swartbooi pointed out the motive for the attack at this stage is still under investigation.
The victim, who was allegedly wounded in the arm, hip and stomach, and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, is still fighting for her life.
According to the victim’s daughter, a third-year medical student following in the frontline health worker’s footsteps, her mother is recovering after surgery. She declined any further comments at this stage, requesting respect for their privacy while dealing with the trauma of the devastating incident and as the suspects involved remain at large.
