All roads lead to Brothers’ Boxing Academy in Strand this weekend for an amateur boxing tournament, supported by five clubs around Cape Town, on Saturday 26 August.

The event is being held in a bid to boost the sport locally, help the club expand its current support base as well as assist boxers with exposure and growth. It will showcase 12 bouts and feature some of the best up-and-coming amateur boxers. Roscoe Pekeur, well-known in the boxing industry, will be the MC in front of what is anticipated to be a sold-out crowd.

It is the second tournament to be hosted by Brothers’ Boxing Academy, following a white-collar fight night last year. This will be the first amateur boxing tournament organised by the academy.

The club has come a long way since being founded by brothers, Heinrich (25) and Theuns Swart (24), in March 2021. The sibling duo showed an interest in combat sports from a young age.

The Strand residents used to train in their garage at Greenways Golf Estate, lifting weights and punching bags during their high school days before they started to take their training more seriously. Theuns joined what was then known as Shadow Boxing Academy, which soon closed down.

“We both took a liking to the sport and it was Theuns’ idea to open our own gym,” Heinrich said. “Professional boxer Amadore Kalonji, who used to train at Shadow Boxing, also joined us as head trainer. It started slow but as we got more exposure, more people started to join. We’re now well over 50 members.”

The academy offers one-on-one and group classes. It also caters for those who just want to get fit as well as others who wish to test their mettle in the boxing ring.

Situated at the Lifestyle Centre in George Street, Strand, Brothers’ Boxing Academy boasts top-class facilities and offers classes throughout the week.

“Last year’s boxing tournament blew us away in terms of the support it received and the interest it sparked in the community. We’re expecting another fun-filled tournament this weekend. It’s very entertaining, there’s a nice vibe and you can feel the tension between opponents. It also creates network opportunities and we looking forward to welcoming the community.”

The amateur boxing tournament will be held at Brothers’ George Street premises this Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00.
