Have you ever imagined the perfect mash-up of Mozart’s elite classical arias and the hearty chuckles of teachers? No? Well, Curro Somerset West just served that unusual blend on a melodious platter. And it’s a feast of hilarity that’s getting encore calls from the digital audience!

Let’s set the scene. An aria in daunting D minor, renowned for its dramatic two-octave range, was the chosen piece. This tantalising tune from “The Magic Flute”, originally crafted for Mozart’s sister-in-law Josepha Hofer and her staggering upper register, became the unsuspecting background score for the male staff’s challenge. To say that the teachers weren’t precisely in their operatic element would be the understatement of the century, but boy, did they nail the humour pitch perfectly!

At the helm of this delightful caper was Tanya Heyns, the visionary Head of Preschool. Envisioning a “Try Not to Laugh” challenge, she rounded up the troops, hoping for some feel-good vibes and camaraderie. What they didn’t anticipate, however, was that this jovial jape would crescendo to viral levels. Clocking in at almost 500 000 views and garnering 7 000 reactions, the video became the talk, or rather the “guffaw” of the town.

The male staff members, with their amusing attempts at hitting high notes and suppressing laughter, were reminiscent of mischievous schoolboys caught in a prank. Curro extends a special shout-out to Mr (Henno) Stone the champion of those high notes! And let’s not forget Mr (Graeme) Waite and Mr (Cobus) van der Westhuizen who, in a bid to hold their poses, became the unsung (pun intended) heroes of the challenge. Curro Langebaan, Curro Sandown and Windhoek Gymnasium are among those who have taken up this challenge.

This harmonious hilarity wasn’t just for giggles within the school’s hallowed halls. It has also struck a chord with fellow schools, sparking an epidemic of joyous challenges. “Our digital hallways are now filled with the echoes of laughter, thanks to this contagious challenge,” reads a statement. “To those who said, ‘Right…let the challenge begin!’ and, ‘This is my favourite one by far, well done gents’, we hear you! The challenge is on, and we’re eagerly awaiting your performance.

“In the grand scheme of things, this light-hearted endeavour underscores the heart of Curro: a community that bonds, laughs, and occasionally bursts into song (however off-tune it may be!). As one commenter beautifully put it, ‘Sometimes we just need this’, indeed, amid our lesson plans, grading marathons and school assemblies, it’s these shared chuckles that add the magic.

“To conclude, we’d say that life at Curro Somerset West isn’t just about hitting the right educational notes, but also about embracing the occasional hilariously wrong ones. To our teachers, a standing ovation for reminding us all that in the grand opera of life, it’s essential to find a moment to laugh, sing and perhaps, just perhaps, become a viral sensation! Encore, gents, encore!”
