The City’s Urban Mobility Portfolio Committee visited the construction of the new public transport interchange (PTI) in Somerset West on Monday 30 October. The construction of the PTI commenced in January 2022, is on schedule and set to be completed in May 2024, provided there are no unforeseen delays. “As we wrap Transport Month up we are excited to see the construction of the new Somerset West Public Transport Interchange is going according to plan,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. “Key structures are already standing. I would say 80% of this job is already done. This PTI will accommodate minibus-taxi operators, bus services, informal traders and commuters. Convenience and making sure that you travel from a safe space is our objective. The new Somerset West PTI is located on the corner of Andries Pretorius and Victoria Street. It is estimated it will serve approximately 4 800 commuters and approximately 300 minibus-taxis on weekdays. On completion, those operating from the PTI will travel to 12 destinations, including Lwandle, Macassar, Firgrove, Strand, Nomzamo, Sir Lowry’s Pass Town, Zola, Khayelitsha, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Grabouw.
