The pure tenor voice of Siyabonga Maqungo (pictured) rang out over the luscious green garden of the historic and picturesque estate. Maqungo’s voice is more often heard singing in the Berlin Opera, and organisers and participants alike were thrilled to have him share his incredible talent which entertained both young and old. Cock invited all the children to the stage, and they loved singing along with the Cape Town Festival Orchestra, which was joined by a mass choir from the Helderberg and surrounds. Among the many carols sung that night, some sombre with deeply felt meaning and others lighthearted and fun, Cock had participants on their feet with their lighted cellphones joyfully singing Jose Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad”. It created a special moment of community and harmony. As the sun went down, the lighting on the Great Lawn became more ethereal. While beautiful music continued to soar above the magnificent camphor trees that created a majestic backdrop, candles were lit, and the sun set over the 2023 Helderberg Hospice Carols by Candlelight.
Helderberg Hospice extended its gratitude to Vergelegen Wine Estate for availing the incredible venue, and everyone who supported the community organisation by organising, volunteering, attending, and participating. The Opperman family from Gordon’s Bay were among many others who embraced the festive spirit with their delightful Christmas attire.
