The matric class of 2023 can be proud of themselves following an overall pass rate of 81.54% in the Western Cape.
All 50 520 candidates who passed met the requirements to access higher education, with 26 182 candidates (42.2%) qualifying with a bachelors pass to attend university.
Western Cape candidates achieved the top mathematics pass rate at 75.4%, and the top physical sciences pass rate at 82.2%, and 24 982 subject distinctions have been awarded to candidates in the Western Cape.
This is an incredible achievement considering the events of 2023, including a devastating minibus taxi strike and an illegal blockade of learner transport in Khayelitsha, two massive floods, and ongoing crippling load shedding.
Results from some of the schools in the Helderberg are as follows:
- Curro Sitari, Somerset College and Generation Schools Somerset West all obtained a 100% IEB pass rate with 100% tertiary exemption, as they did in 2022;
- Gordon High increased from 62,8% in 2022 to 65,2% in 2023;
- Hottentots-Holland High obtained 91,5% in 2022; and increased to 93,6% in 2023;
- Khanyolwethu Secondary increased significantly from 66% in 2022 to 80,2% in 2023;
- Macassar High showed a drop from 66,7% in 2022 to 58,4% in 2023;
- Nomzamo High boasts an increase from 80,1% in 2022 to 88,5% in 2023;
- Strand High dropped from 98,2% in 2022 to 97,3% in 2023;
- Rusthof Secondary increased from 47,9% in 2022 to 64,1% in 2023;
- Simanyene Secondary School increased from 79% in 2022 to 88.8% in 2023;
- Strand Secondary increased from 54,2% in 2022 to 68,3% in 2023; and
- Zandvliet High increased from 70,3% in 2022 to 78,4% in 2023.
