The body of a yet unidentified man was discovered early on Monday morning (18 March) in an open field adjacent to De Kock Street in Strand, a notorious piece of ground that is a busy thoroughfare of pedestrian traffic on a daily basis.
The body was discovered by passers-by at about 06:44, according to a police report. “The deceased was lying on his stomach with five open stab wounds to the head,” stated the report.
A small crowd of curious onlookers gathered around the scene while others continued their way to work almost unperturbed by the distressing scene.
The motive behind the alleged murder remained unclear, but it is suspected the unidentified male could’ve been the victim of a robbery as his body was found without shoes. It is also alleged the murder could have possibly taken place earlier over the weekend.
“The body was already stiff and the scene indicates the body was dumped there,” the report said. “(There are) no witnesses and no known suspects.”
At the time of print, Strand police stated that family of the deceased are being sought to help identify the body, which has been described as that of an African male between the ages of 25 and 35, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. It is believed that he could have been from the Lwandle area.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
