A heated feud between two taxi drivers reached a tragic climax on the night of Friday 29 March, resulting in a fatal altercation that claimed the life of one individual.
According to WO Nico Beukes, spokesperson for Strand police, the incident unfolded in 5th Street in Strand. Beukes confirmed the clash stemmed from a dispute of a financial nature that had been festering between the deceased and the prime suspect for quite some time. This dispute had apparently escalated over the course of the week, culminating in a violent confrontation that turned deadly.
Beukes said police were called to the scene at 22:25. It is believed the 42-year-old suspect and the 40-year-old victim were engaged in an altercation. During this confrontation the deceased apparently struck the suspect with a hammer. In response, the suspect, accompanied by five associates, retaliated by allegedly launching an assault on the deceased. Armed with knives they inflicted fatal injuries on the victim before fleeing the scene. Despite being rushed to a private hospital for medical treatment, the grievously wounded victim succumbed to his injuries.
The 42-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (2 April), facing a charge of murder.
According to Beukes the investigation is still ongoing, and knives used in the attack are yet to be recovered.
