Heartlands Baby Sanctuary marked its ninth birthday with a celebratory open day and special flag-raising ceremony last Friday (3 May). Pictured are staffers who shared in the momentous occasion, which included birthday eats and treats and a fun-filled gathering with the children at the premises in Old Paardevlei Road, Somerset West. The facility was established on 4 May 2015 in response to the request of the provincial Department of Social Development to offer temporary residential safe care and support for children in need of urgent care and protection. The registered child and youth care centre and community mental health facility cares for 25 children at any given time and provides holistic care for orphaned and vulnerable children from birth to six years of age. Tarryn Smith (receptionist), Monica Buitendag (CEO) and Ulen Afrika (social worker and volunteer coordinator) proudly celebrated the facility’s milestone.

Monica Buitendag (Heartlands CEO), Magrieta Erasmus, Sylvia Kotze (facility manager) and Eugénie Smith were the proud recipients of certificates marking their ninth year as dedicated members of the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary team.
Macassar husband-and-wife-duo Jurie and Sureta Adendorf popped into the facility’s second-hand store for good-condition preloved books which they resell at a market in Franschhoek. The business couple will also be in book-sale action at the upcoming Franschhoek Literary Festival.
