Young patrons will be engaged in captivating and engaging storytelling sessions as part of the winter-holiday programme, set to bring the warmth to Helderberg libraries and recreational centres.

Helderberg youngsters can kick boredom to the curb for the next few weeks as libraries and recreation centres in the basin will be abuzz with activities as part of a fun-filled programme to ensure the school holidays are anything but cold and wet.

The various facilities, including those in Strand, Macassar, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Nomzamo, will host a range of indoor and outdoor programmes for children during the winter-holiday break.

The extensive list of activities includes games days, arts and crafts, sports events, a spelling bee, a movie carnival and a chess competition.

“Each holiday we pull out all the stops to ensure our young people are not only having fun, but they remain active,” said Mayco Member for Community Services and Health Patricia van der Ross. “The winter school holiday can seem even longer when it’s rainy and cold, but the aim of our exciting holiday programme is to create a safe space for children to play and learn.

“Children need space to breathe, relax and engage in activities that make them happy. Play is essential to children’s growth and development and I want to encourage parents and guardians to let their children participate in these events.”
