The Strand Bodyboard Collective is growing at a steady pace and is said to be one of the largest in South Africa.

Nestled along the sun-kissed shores of picturesque Strand you might find among the waves the Wave Lovers, also known as the Strand Bodyboard Collective, a sanctuary for enthusiasts of surf, sea and the boogie board.

Founded by a group of passionate local boogie boarders, it has grown into a vibrant mini-community where the thrill of riding waves intertwines with the bonds of friendship and camaraderie. It evolved into the Strand Body Board Collective and can be traced back to when a handful of locals discovered their shared passion for boogie boarding. They decided to form a group that would welcome anyone with a similar zeal.

“Over the past two years this small group has blossomed into a large, diverse group of close to 300 people while still welcoming new members of all ages and skill levels. You might find them at the lifesaving clubhouse, where the Bean Spoiled coffee kiosk serves coffee to cold wet bodies, remembering most of the orders as the surfers appear,” the group said in a statement.

With its inclusive and supportive atmosphere, this group of people have become the cornerstone of many lives, it added. Whether one is a seasoned rider or a complete beginner, the group offers a warm welcome and a wealth of resources. New members meet experienced mentors who eagerly guide them through the basics of boogie boarding, ensuring they gain confidence and skill at their own pace.

“The group has also become a haven for people who arrive from other parts of the country, some seeking a quick connection with the locals,” the group said.

“Instead of sitting at home alone due the loss of a family member or in the process of recovering from illness or suffering from depression or heartbreak, the bodyboarders serve as a ‘family’ that will make you feel at home almost immediately. The ups and downs of life shared eagerly and openly, while giving comforting hugs and encouragement is the keystone of every day.”

Their calendar is also brimful of activities and events designed to keep the spirit of adventure alive, as members get to know other surf spots on the Atlantic seafront.

“Members mostly gather at dawn to catch the best waves of the day after a daily wave and wind video report is made from a nearby apartment block. The surfing sessions are not just about riding waves, but also about sharing stories, tips, and laughter afterwards. For the members of the Strand Body Board Collective it is more than just a place to practice their sport; it is a second family. The friendships forged on the waves extend beyond the beach.

“In this group of friends, the thrill of the ride is matched only by the warmth of the members, making it a true gem in the world of bodyboarding.”
