A raging shack fire in Nomzamo claimed the lives of two residents and left seven others displaced.
This according to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, following the devastating tragedy on Saturday 29 June.
He confirmed two adult men had succumbed to burn wounds in an early-morning fire in the township.
“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service was notified of informal structures burning in Benox Street at 01:40. Firefighting crews from Sir Lowry’s Pass, Strand, Somerset West, Macassar and Mitchells Plain fire stations attended to the scene, he said.
“Firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the blaze, which destroyed five informal structures and left seven persons displaced by 03:00. The bodies of the two men were found among the debris and certified deceased by medical personnel.”
Carelse added the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the matter was being investigated by police.
