Young men from Strand were among many others from various communities, including Asthon, Delft, Stellenbosch and Ocean View, who participated in the Cape Winelands Head, Heart and Soul Weekend at Karmel campsite in the Franschhoek mountains from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 June. The initiative saw the avid participants engage in a rites-of-passage programme aimed at helping young men navigate notions of manhood, fatherhood and positive masculinity in the world. A statement from the organisers said: “It was beautiful to witness the young men embark on a journey to peel back the layers of trauma, heal wounds and combat challenges with mental health as they mapped their internal landscape to walk a different path, one of breaking the cycle of crime, violence and toxic masculinity, to begin healing, hope and deep personal transformation. We pray the voices of healing, hope and resilience continue to echo in the hearts and minds of the young men we worked with this weekend.”
