Earthbox, a unique immersive installation at Lourensford Wine Estate, offers a profound journey into the earth’s history through a subterranean chamber, blending nature, engineering and imagination. It is open until 1 September.

The global first, Earthbox, which launched at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West for a limited period of time last November, remains open to the public from Thursday to Sunday until it closes permanently on Sunday 1 September.

The unprecedented attraction is a truly unique immersive installation designed to offer visitors an engaging journey into the earth. A blend of nature, engineering, history and imagination, Earthbox takes visitors 5 m below the surface of the ground by way of a gently curved ramp that leads into a 24 m-long excavated chamber.

Within the dimly lit chamber they are offered a moving experience and another perspective on life by being brought into contact with raw earth walls dating back through millions of years to a time well before the dawn of humanity. Earthbox’s creators, The Dream Commission, envisioned the installation as a place of reflection, an escape from the hustle and bustle.

While Earthbox is an attraction in its own right it also serves as a one-of-a-kind environment available as a venue for private hire and where extraordinary events and workshops are hosted.

Tickets for Earthbox range from R120 to R180, and all tickets must be booked online at https://earthbox.co.za/.

  • Earthbox is open from 09:00 to 17:00, with the last entry at 16:20 for the pure experience. For more information visit https://earthbox.co.za.
