A cuppa for a worthy cause

The third annual Cup for Cancer was held at the hall of Dr GJ Joubert Primary School in Strand on Sunday (13 October). In all, 400 people attended the event and the community of Strand raised R25 000 for the oncology departments of Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital. In addition to the funds raised through the event, Strand Moslem Primary School asked its learners to donate R5 to the cause, and raised R2 300. The Khan family, proprietors of the local Planet Food chain, also donated R6 000 in memory of a family member who lost the fight to cancer. Cancer survivors Althea Thysen, Daphne Smallberg, Renata Gabrils, Nadia Davids, Saadiqa Brinkhuis, Carmen Philander and René de Vries were also in attendance.
