A heroic armed security officer behind the wheel of a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle thwarted an armed-robbery attempt during a collection at Nomzamo U-Save on Monday (10 February). According to police the CIT vehicle arrived at the Nomzamo Business Centre around 12:58 to collect an undisclosed amount of money from the supermarket. Following collection, the security officers were targeted by the suspected armed robbers while exiting with the cash boxes via a back entrance near the taxi rank. “Four suspects armed with firearms swooped on the security officers, ordering the collection crew to the ground. The brave driver, however, reacted swiftly after anticipating what was to unfold. He pulled his firearm, opening fire at the unsuspecting robbers. A shoot-out ensued as the suspects returned fire in an attempt to flee,” said Lwandle police spokesperson Mthokozisi Gama. One of the security officers (38) who assisted with the collection, was wounded in the upper right arm and was transported to hospital for treatment. No money was taken and the CIT security officers immediately drove to the Lwandle Police Station, where a case of attempted cash-in-transit robbery was opened for further investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crim
