The 18th Trek, the flagship of Somerset College’s Outdoor Education Programme, was held recently.
The 27-day journey of self-discovery is undertaken annually by all Grade 9 learners.
The learners cover 360 km on foot, in canoes and on bicycles. The remarkable journey starts on foot at the school and ends on the beach in the De Hoop Nature Reserve.
The Grade 9 year group is divided into two groups, a girls’ group and boys’ group of approximately fourteen students each with two adults – teachers or past students.
This is a special time of reflection, adventure and mental, spiritual and physical growth and learners are not allowed to take cellphones or any electronic devices. The Trek is a rite of passage that focuses on the positive, and out of which young people emerge stronger, fitter and healthier – and ready to tackle the senior secondary phase of school.
